After the Saalbach Classic was held for the first time last year, the rally was held for the second time on the weekend of August 20-24, 2014.
Unfortunately, founding member Hannes Fürstauer (67) was no longer with us. He succumbed to a persistent illness in the spring, but partner Walter Zipser and son Niki Fürstauer did not give up and carried on the legacy in accordance with Hannes' last wishes.
If Hannes had not been missed every day as a lovable person, his absence would hardly have been noticeable. Niki had the organization so well under control that there was no noticeable difference to the first event.
Camaraderie counts
Under the patronage of Walter Röhrl, 80 classic car enthusiasts from various countries came to Saalbach-Hinterglemm and enjoyed the days behind the wheel in mixed weather conditions and at the communal table with food and drink.
Everything positive from the first edition was retained and small improvements were made here and there. Once again, there was plenty of time to talk petrol together, stay at great locations, enjoy excellently prepared food and have an evening at leisure.
Still no coffee ride
Nevertheless, the Saalbach Classic is and remains a sporting event, far removed from a coffee run. On the first day of the rally, the Grossglockner was plagued by Mother Holle and it was only decided early in the morning on the second day to drive the stage over the Grossglockner at all.
A good decision, because the weather was at its best that morning. All around the Grossglockner there was a thick blanket of clouds and only the pass road offered the participants a clear view of the deep blue sky.
Many pre-war vehicles
One of the aims of the event is to attract many pre-war cars and so there were around 17 examples of all types at the start. This class was won by a Morgan Threewheeler. Florian Kunz has his special three-wheeler with hand throttle and reverse gears under control like no other and his daughter Marlene braved the rain and cold as co-driver and navigated flawlessly.
Last year's overall winner Alfred Jodl switched from the AC to the pre-war class and started with the Rally NCP from 1932. The beautiful little racing car without fenders showered its occupants in turn after turn in every bend.
When asked why he was not back at the start with his winning car, the AC, Jodl said: "Because winning is not what counts for me, it's much more about the technical component. Driving a pre-war car is a big and completely different challenge. Because these vehicles have a re-synchronized gearbox, the driver needs an enormous amount of effort to change gear. In addition, the chassis and tires require careful handling on today's roads. The steering has a tractive force of 15 to 20 kg per steering input. You often get blisters on your hands. But it's a great experience because you can put yourself in the shoes of the 1930s. My son and I also restore the classic cars ourselves."
And they do these restorations carefully and to a first-class standard.
Overall victory in 2014 went to Dieter and Florian Böhmdorfer in a 1962 Jaguar Mk ll.
Unexpected problems
Task 1: What do you do when the driver's windshield wiper goes out in the middle of the special stage? Correct: You first drive to the end of the special stage, then turn around and retrieve the windshield wiper, provided you can find it again.
Task 2: What do you do on a rally if the speedometer cable suddenly breaks? There are two possibilities. The white road pillars are 33.3 m apart, so the distance traveled can be calculated. An alternative to this time-consuming counting method is to follow the rider in front, ride at the same distance and wait one minute before crossing the finish line. Caution is advised with variant two, as not everyone in front may be enthusiastic about such a plan.
Although both tasks are not commonplace, the participants in the second Saalbach Classic were confronted with problems of this kind.
Again in 2015
In the end, however, everyone was enthusiastic again and several reservations have already been made for the 3rd Saalbach Classic in 2015. Further results can be found on the event website.
Zwischengas" was also guaranteed a starting place and this will be drawn in December among loyal readers who own a car built before 1972.
