The fourth edition of Pista & Piloti at the Triwo test track in Pferdsfeld (Hunsrück) once again more than lived up to the motto "Racing with friends". As usual, the 240 starting places for the "Gran Premio Alfa Romeo" on Sunday had already been allocated months before the event. However, this time the Alfisti really stepped on the gas with the entries. Last year, they had provided almost half of the starters, and with almost 140 now, they were clearly in the majority. The event was extended on Saturday to include an Alfa Romeo track day (for newer models from 2003 onwards) and a scoring run by the ASC (Allgemeiner Schnauferl-Club) Hessen.

Charly Willems Memorial Trophy on Saturday
After the Alfa Romeo Trackday with over 60 starters, the annual ASC Hessen race for the "Charly Willems Memorial Trophy" was held in the evening as a special treat. This race should actually have taken place as part of the Oldtimer Grand Prix at the Nürburgring, but no longer fitted into the program due to the numerous activities as part of the 50th anniversary in the Eifel. Too bad for the Ring, good for Pferdsfeld.

After a twenty-minute practice session, the 17 starters were sent off on their 13-lap journey by Emilia Wimmer (the daughter of organizer Marco Wimmer) with the Italian flag and a Le Mans start. In the end, Marc Schmitz in the Elva FJ100 came out on top with 8.70 points, just ahead of Aaron Tschörner (Hotchkiss AM 80S) with 8.96 points and Thomas Eßer in the Wolseley Hornet Special with 9.01 points. The evening was rounded off with a live talk by legendary speaker Rainer Braun and Karsten Arndt from the "Alte Schule" podcast. Braun also took the opportunity to greet the drivers at the drivers' briefing on Sunday and make the inevitable jokes with his long-time friend and companion Jürgen Zehra. Braun's not entirely serious "accusation" that "you left for the Palatinate years ago" was cleverly countered with "I can buy very good fresh white bread in France every morning for that!"
Revision of the concept, no changes to the weather
Previously, there had always been three races with a driving time of around 20 minutes. Now, for the first time, there were only two heats. However, these were with approx. 30 minutes driving time in one go and thus once less without the usual loss of time that the starting grid and run-out laps normally entail. The division into six classes was retained, but the "Campionato Formula & Prototipi" prototype class, which was never really well attended, was deleted and replaced by the "Anniversario Autodelta & Quadrifoglio" class.

In fact, the four-leaf clover, which was first seen on an Alfa Romeo at the 1923 Targa Florio, celebrated its 100th birthday this year. The tuning company Autodelta was founded in 1963 by Carlo Chiti. Two years later, Alfa Romeo took over the company and made it the official racing department. The other classes "Giro D'Italia", "Gran Premio Alfa Romeo", "Trofeo Alfasud Revival", "Coppa Veloce" and "Gran Premio Tazio Nuvolari" were left unchanged.

It really is like being bewitched. Unfortunately, the eighth edition (including the two events in Klassikstadt Frankfurt and at Michelbach airfield) was again completely dependent on the weather: in all even years it was fine, in all odd years there was rain. This year it looked really good. On Saturday it was glorious late summer weather, on Sunday it was still fine at first, but there was a first tolerable shower in the penultimate class race before the lunch break. Just after the break, a heavy downpour followed, so that the second race had to be stopped. After that it was quiet. Two classes still had to battle with the wet track, but the rest were either wet or dry again at the end.

A select field of pre-war vehicles
The ASC field on Saturday had already been good, but the field in the "Gran Premio Tazio Nuvolari" class with over 25 pre-war cars, from Alfa Romeo, Alvis, Ansaldo, Bentley Bugatti, Hotchkiss, Lagonda, Mercedes, MG to Railton, Rally, Riley, Steyer, Triumph and Wolsley was of the very finest.

Supplemented by the Elva of ASC run winner Schmitz, two Giulietta Barchetta, an Austin-Healey and a tiny FMR TG500 (Tiger). Good for all the drivers and two female drivers in the old, open-top cars: Both heats could be completed on a dry track.
Next year, of course, it will continue in the same place. Then guaranteed without rain, because 2024 is an even year after all. Promise!
