It was finally time again. After the cars had to stay in the garage and the Panama hats in the closet in 2020, it was finally time to indulge in the lust for fine metal again on August 15 in Monterey, California. The organizers obviously felt the same pent-up demand as the visitors and awarded prizes in 26 categories as well as 13 special prizes - more than ever before.
Prominent judges
The list of prominent honorary judges was long again this year. In addition to former Lamborghini test driver Valentino Balboni, ex-Formula 1 driver Jochen Mass and former McLaren designer Gordon Murray, who were already allowed to judge the exhibited cars in 2019, Nick Mason, drummer of Pink Floyd and car collector for almost as long, and Andrea Zagato, grandson of company founder Ugo Zagato, were also invited this year.
A New Name
In addition to big names such as Packard, Duesenberg and Rolls-Royce, this year's Pebble Beach event also featured a name that is not usually associated with this type of event: Lamborghini. To mark the 50th anniversary of the Countach, a colorful mix of eight Gandini wedges - from the original LP400 to the spoilered 25th Anniversary - gathered for a special show including its own awards ceremony.
Benz of Show
The angular Italian was admittedly a few decades too young for the "Best of Show" title. This year's overall victory went to the 1938 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Autobahnkurier from Arturo Keller. This is the ninth time since 1950 that a Mercedes-Benz has secured the title of the most beautiful car of the weekend, putting the Stuttgart-based brand on a par with top dog Bugatti. Duesenberg followed in third place among the most successful Pebble Beach brands with six best-of-show victories, ahead of Rolls-Royce with five.
