On Sunday, August 16, the 65th Concours d'Elegance took place in Pebble Beach, California. This year's event once again attracted 219 vehicles from 16 different countries. When the Concours d'Elegance was founded in 1950, its aim was to preserve our mechanical heritage and vehicles are still judged and awarded prizes based on their technical value, style and elegance. In addition to the Concours, a Tour d'Elégance was also organized as every year.
The cars presented on Sunday were manufactured before 1972, such as the Mustang Shelby GT350, which was celebrating its 50th birthday. A special show was organized by "The Quail" to mark the occasion, with around 40 of these cars built by Carroll Shelby lined up in a row. The Lincoln Continental, which was already celebrating its 75th anniversary, was also one of the veterenans.
Swiss bodywork as Best of Show
The 2015 Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8A F with a Swiss bodywork from Worblaufen dating from 1924 was chosen as the winner of the "Best of Show" award and thus the winner of the day.
Jim Patterson from Louisville has owned this classic since 2014. In 1933, this special body could be admired at the Geneva Motor Show, the same year the car also won the Grand-Prix d'Honneur in Cannes.
As always, the Concours d'Elégance was complemented by many special shows.
Le Mans long-tail racing cars
A special attraction were five legendary Le Mans racing cars, all of which were once driven by motorsport legends. One of the prototypes on display was the Porsche 908/02 long-tail, the so-called "Flounder", which was driven by Richard Attwood and Vic Elford in the 1969 12 Hours of Sebring, albeit as a short-tail at the time. But just one year later, Rudi Lins and Helmut Marko took part in the 24 Hours of Le Mans with the 908 converted to a long-tail.
Birtte Bob Tullius competed twice at Le Mans with the Jaguar XJR-5 in 1984 and 1985. The Mazda Speed 757 was also built in 1985. Just one year later, the Mazda won its class at Le Mans. The latest of the Le Mans race cars on display was built in 2007. The Pescaloro 01 was the first of a total of nine cars built and competed in the endurance championship until 2009.
Porsche 356 until 1965
15 Porsches 356 from the years 1952 to 1965 were given a place of honor in the middle of the grounds. A Porsche from the second year of production could be admired for the first time in its unrestored original condition after standing in a garage for over 30 years.
The other vehicles had all been restored at least once and therefore had one or two stories to tell. Such as the Porsche 356A Cerebra 1500 GS Coupé, which was purchased by Douglas Oldfield in 1975. The Porsche was the then 19-year-old's first car, but the original engine was missing. He spent the next 20 years searching for the Fuhrmann engine until he finally found it and nothing stood in the way of a complete restoration.
Ferrari
The seven Ferrari sports cars from 1952 to 2015, which were spread across the entire site, were something special. One of them was the Ferrari 342/375 America Cabriolet, which was delivered to King Leopold of Belgium and was also the first ever left-hand drive convertible.
Also worth seeing were the Ferari 340 Mexico, in which Eugenio Castellotti took part in the 1953 Mille Miglia, and the Ferrari Berlinetta Lusso from 2015, of which there are only five examples.
