Even in mountainous Switzerland, this has not been seen for many decades: snow down to the lowlands on a 5th of May! In St. Gallen, 19 centimetres were measured, more than the previous record set in 1957, and all records since measurements began were also broken in other places.
So the weather wasn't really ideal for a classic car meeting, but traditionally the first Oldtimer Sunday Morning Meeting in Zug takes place on the first weekend in May, and so it was on May 5, 2019.
Plenty of space for once
While there had been some fear of traffic chaos in the run-up to the event because the access routes had to be organized differently due to another event, the old cars trickled in so slowly from the opening of the site that there was hardly ever a long traffic jam at the entrance on Chamerstrasse.
Even at 11:00 a.m., when the area near the bull stables is normally bursting at the seams, only half the field was filled with classic cars.
More time to admire individual cars
So there was plenty of time to admire every single car that had found its way to Zug despite the threat of snow and possible salting.
And the individual classic cars were also shown to much better advantage, and the photographers in particular were certainly pleased with the comfortable space available for once.
The weather turned out to be better than feared, and some classic car drivers probably managed both the outward and return journeys on almost dry roads.
Special features
The weather conditions meant that some classic car owners arrived for once with a car that they might not have shown in Zug if the weather had been fine. For example, there was a VW Passat which, according to its sticker, already has over 500,000 km on the clock, and an Opel Rekord station wagon that was once used by the TCS breakdown service.
A Ford Scorpio has probably also rarely been seen parked so centrally at the OSMT.
Not quite winter-proof
Enzmann's cars actually belong more to the leisure vehicle category.
There were correspondingly few of them at the club meeting of the Enzmann Guild in Zug.
The really hard-boiled ones still drove with the roof down.
Better coffee than beer
It was certainly more like coffee weather, because with outside temperatures just above zero degrees, the classic car crews, some of whom arrived without heating, were certainly looking for something warm. Nevertheless, there were some good conversations and for once it was possible to talk to all the colleagues for longer, without the usual hectic pace.
Despite the positive aspects, the organizers (and also the commercial exhibitors) would certainly have hoped for a larger turnout and better weather. But this will certainly happen at the next event, which will take place on June 2, 2019.
