Fans of the Oldtimer Sunday Morning Meeting had to wait two years before they could gather again at the Stierenstallungen in Zug. Organizer Robi Hümbeli had to cancel event after event in the coronavirus years 2020 and 2021.
On May 15, 2022, all the restrictions were finally lifted and the vintage and classic car owners arrived in Zug in droves. And even the weather cooperated as if there had never been a winter. Sunshine and summer-like temperatures beckoned.
Mass...
Soon after the gates opened at 09:30, the large space between the bull stables was full and a second parking lot opposite had to be used. By lunchtime, there was a constant flow of people coming and going and a total of over 1000 old cars must have found their way to Zug.
Almost everything that was on Swiss roads 40 or 60 years ago was there. Everyday cars from Fiat, Opel or Volkswagen were represented as well as more luxurious limousines, convertibles or coupés from Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Lancia or Rover. The variety was more than just impressive.
...and class
Between your former means of mass transportation, which unfortunately have not survived in huge numbers, there were one or two raisins, the likes of which you probably never saw back then.
An Osca Barchetta, an Aston Martin DB4, a Lamborghini Countach, a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster or a BMW 2002 turbo stood out.
But the list could be extended almost indefinitely, because as soon as you turned a corner, you caught sight of the next jewel.
And as new cars kept arriving, you could spot new vehicles even on the umpteenth walk through the rows.
Colorful
It was a truly colorful array of cars. One example was the small selection of vehicles that stood out in green paintwork. Whether it was a Corvette C3 modified by Nyffenegger, a...
...a VW Beetle...
...or a Jeep, green was popular.
But so were other colors, and in total, almost the entire rainbow spectrum is likely to have been found in the cars in Zug.
Exotic
Of course, there was no shortage of exotic cars either.
These certainly included the Fiberfab Bonito as well as the Spartan Roadster and the Gilbern Invader.
And almost everyone was probably able to talk about a car that they had never seen in real life before. Some may even have been motivated to read about it.
Of beetles, ponies and little horses
Three brands were particularly well represented in Zug on May 15, 2022, as three clubs had called on their members to come in large numbers to the first OSMT in 2022.
There was the Swiss Beetle Cabriolet Club, which was able to present almost the entire spectrum of open Beetles and in many colors.
Then the members of the Mustang Club of Switzerland showed the various facets that the Ford Mustang has to reveal.
Mach 1 models were particularly well represented, but even the rare Shelby variants were on site.
Finally, the Porsche Club Glarnerland ensured that the Zuffenhausen 356 and 911 models could not be overlooked.
A folk festival for all
The relatively central location in Zug allowed not only classic car drivers (the age limit for the meeting is actually 30 years or 1991) to come to the meeting, but also spectators from near and far who simply wanted to see and get a taste of old cars.
The catering on offer ensured that nobody had to go home hungry and the soft ice cream stand was of course particularly busy. The small children enjoyed the many colorful little cars, the older children the powerful American cars and rustic motorcycles. There was something for everyone.
A good omen
All in all, this edition of the classic car Sunday morning meeting in Zug can certainly be seen as a good omen for the classic car scene in general. The interest in old cars is still good and the motivation to show your car to a larger audience is there.
And because there were so many children and young people on site (and in the cars), there is a little less need to worry about the next generation after the event.
The extensive picture gallery accompanying this report provides a good overview of the event, which will be held four more times in 2022 - on June 12, July 3, August 7 and September 11.
P.S. As always, the Zwischegas editorial team has made every effort to attribute the photos as specifically and correctly as possible. But sometimes even the best detective's intuition can't help and the brand, type or year are incorrectly identified. That's why the help of our readers is all the more appreciated when they provide better information about a picture in the form of a comment. Zwischengas thanks you!
