Preview (beginning of the article)
At dawn on November 2, 384 pioneering vehicles, their daring drivers and co-drivers, and numerous early risers gathered in London's Hyde Park. Despite rain before dawn (typically British), spirits were high as everyone eagerly awaited the sunrise that signaled the start of the RM Sotheby's London to Brighton Veteran Car Run 2025. The Veteran Car Run is the oldest continuously run motorized event in the world. This almost magical event catapults us back to the beginnings of motoring history. It is now 129 years since the original Emancipation Run of 1896, which celebrated the passing of the Locomotives on Highways Act. This landmark law increased the speed limit for "light steam engines" from four to fourteen miles per hour and abolished the requirement that a man with a red flag must always lead the way.
