The 11th International Concours d'Elégance took place on September 4-6, 2015 in the magnificent garden park of the baroque palace in mostly friendly weather. With over 200 participants showing their well-maintained and often rare and interesting cars from all eras, the organizers' expectations were exceeded.
There were also many other vehicles exhibited by clubs and companies. The very large number of visitors and enthusiasts were able to enjoy a spacious exhibition in the beautiful setting of one of Germany's most important castle complexes.
Enthusiasm
As soon as visitors entered the garden, they were greeted by some particularly rare and magnificent collector's items, eliciting enthusiastic comments from young and old alike. The 1960 Lancia Flaminia "Loraymo" coupé, uniquely designed by the great designer Raymond Loewy and built by Carrozzeria Motto, remained a one-off. This was a surprise even for brand connoisseurs. Just a few steps away, there was a beautifully restored example of each of two now almost forgotten German brands. The futuristic Röhr streamlined saloon built by Autenrieth with a hatchback, center fin and two huge headlights celebrated another premiere here and the overall victory in the form of the "Best of Show" trophy.
A classic convertible of the Simson Supra A with an 8-cylinder 90 hp engine was on display.
Another crowd-puller was the 1931 Maybach Zeppelin, which traveled to Schwetzingen in Baden on its own wheels to meet up with an 8-litre Pullman and a Maybach Zeppelin Cabriolet Spohn.
Racing car rarity
Many other jewels of automotive history were encountered on the tour.
These included the Paris-Madrid racing car No. 5 from 1903, developed by Ettore Bugatti for DeDietrich, and the DeDion-Bouton racing car for the 1908 GP, albeit the road-going version with carbide lamps and small fenders. Several veteran cars from Mercedes, Opel, Benz. Loreley and others were impressive.
A Stanley Steamer from America and the replica of the 1896 Ford Quadricycle were fascinating. The 1920s and 1930s were also well represented, from small cars to powerful luxury vehicles. The selection of post-war models ranged from light family cars to many great sports cars, solid used cars, special bodies, a number of Americans and rows of Jaguars and Porsches.
Very small cars on a grand scale
A special area was reserved for microcars. Here there was a reunion with many models from the 50s and 60s.
In two parades, Brütsch Mopetta and Zwerg rolled through the French garden together with the British Scootacar, Berkeley and Ashley through the trellis of hundreds of spectators, followed by Heinkel Kabine and Isetta, all Goggo models, a Lloyd 300 from 1952 with "Leukoplast bodywork", as well as the rare Kroboth, the Goggo scooter, the Champion, Gutbrod, Maico and Messerschmitt. Almost all microcars were represented, rounded off by the Glas Isar 600, the Daffodil 600, the Renault 4 CV and all important variants of the Fiat 500 Topolino - the "Micro-Concours" will continue to be an important part of the AvD-Classic-Gala Schwetzingen in the future.
International event
Schwetzingen is not only easy to reach from many parts of Germany, but also from the surrounding countries. The journey from Switzerland takes just under 4 hours, including tolerable traffic jams on the highway. So there were also cars from Switzerland to be seen, but participants also traveled from other countries. The 20,000 visitors also spoke a wide variety of languages.
Next year's Classic Gala will take place from September 2 to 4. Schwetzingen is well worth a visit!
