Summary
The pass road over the Stelvio Pass is 200 years old. This was of course celebrated, somewhat prematurely, but all the more impressively. It's worth taking a look back at how the former mule track gravel road has changed into today's pass road and which racing events it was used for. Around 140 years ago, the world of the automobile gradually began to turn. Although the generic term itself is much younger: it was only 125 years ago, in 1900, that the word "automobile", imported from France, began to replace "motor car" in German usage. On the other hand, the huge automotive macrocosm contains a number of inventions, achievements and devices that made their debut much earlier - the very first representative being, of course, the wheel itself. But also petrol, which established itself primarily as a cleaning agent around 1850. What may come as a surprise, however, is that one of the world's most famous roads compared to the automobile is a full-blown Methuselah: the route of the Stelvio Pass, probably the most famous and spectacular Alpine pass of all. In fact, the superlative route, which peaks at 2757 meters above sea level and links the Valtellina (Lombardy) with the Venosta Valley (South Tyrol), is considered the undisputed king of Alpine passes. It was opened in October 1825 (the exact date is not historically known) and is therefore celebrating its 200th birthday these days.
