Summary
When the new Mercedes-Benz SL was presented in 2001, it left its popular predecessor far behind with its technology and at the same time offered a glimpse into the automotive future. Just a few weeks after the SL 500, the SL 55 AMG was also presented, which made it into the super sports car league in terms of performance. But how does this steam hammer feel almost 20 years later, now matured into a neo-classic and youngtimer? This driving report describes the history of the Mercedes-Benz R230 series and shows the SL 55 AMG and its siblings in many current and historical pictures. There is also a sound sample.

The Mercedes-Benz SL of the R230 model series is considered a neo-classic, especially in the AMG SL 55 version. When it was introduced, it embodied what was feasible in its class at the time. This still makes it look modern today. In 1989, Mercedes-Benz presented the successor to the R107 and it was a leap into the modern age. The design by Bruno Sacco was a complete departure from its predecessor, while the technology with a roof that could be opened electro-hydraulically without manual intervention was innovative. However, work on the successor R230 began as early as 1996. Designers around the world submitted design proposals, some of which were spatially represented using traditional modeling methods, others using modern computer technology. The final design was finalized in June 1997.
