Since the days of the 170 D, Daimler-Benz has also equipped its smallest vehicle type with a diesel engine. It is not only the fact that the compression-ignition engines with their formerly rather rough and sometimes uncultivated engine running are offered by this company that is astonishing, but also the success of the diesel-powered cars with the three-pointed star. For while the diesel engine has now established itself almost everywhere in the field of commercial vehicle construction, most car buyers have not really been able to make friends with it. Several automobile companies have already tried to exploit the advantages of the diesel process in passenger cars, but buyers have decided against it. On the continent, only Peugeot and Mercedes, whose diesel versions represent a not insignificant percentage of all units produced, have not been discouraged. At Daimler-Benz, the 190 D was even the best-selling model of all.
