On March 8, 1982, Mercedes Benz presented the W 201 model series, immediately dubbed the "Baby Benz" by the press. The Mercedes 190/190E was established as a competitor to the popular BMW three-series. Anyone who couldn't or didn't want to buy one would sooner or later come into contact with a representative of this model series, usually as a cab, with beige paintwork, presumably powered by a diesel engine and just under 70 hp. But Mercedes could also do things differently. In collaboration with Cosworth, the engine manufacturer known from Formula 1, a four-valve head was developed for the well-behaved M 102 sedan engine and the 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine was tuned to 185 hp at 6,200 rpm. The rev limiter only kicked in at 7,000 rpm - what a departure from the otherwise well-behaved saloon technology.
