The Jaguar Mark 2 and its competitors
Summary
The compact Jaguar was launched in 1955. Alongside the large saloon (Mark VII) and the XK sports car, this was the third Jaguar model series to be equipped with the same, then very modern six-cylinder engine with two overhead camshafts. For the smaller sedan, the displacement was reduced to 2.4 liters. However, when it quickly became clear that more power would also be of interest in this sportier and more manageable car, the 3.4-liter engine used in the XK sports car and the large Jaguar saloon was also offered from 1957. Between 1955 and 1959, over 37,000 Jaguar Mark 1s were built, around 20,000 of them with the 2.4-liter engine and over 17,000 with the more powerful 3.4-liter engine. For Jaguar, the compact car was a direct hit.
