When the Alfa Romeo GTV 6 (the GTV Sei was also mentioned in the first introductions) was presented, it was emphasized that this was an affordable sports car that would close the gap between Alfa Romeo's previous model range and that of Ferrari. At CHF 26,950, or DM 29,900, the price was indeed high, but for us youngsters, whose license to drive a car was only a few years old, it was as unattainable as a first class ticket from Pan Am to New York. We drove a second-hand Alfasud, Simca or Opel and we had only ever seen a new car with our fathers. But the appeal of the GTV 6 was enormous. We studied the sales brochure and the test reports in the car magazines forwards and backwards and dreamed of one day being able to start the brilliant six-cylinder ourselves.
