Who doesn't know them, the films of Helmut Deimel... Not you? Then you've missed something very special. No other filmmaker has probably filmed as many decades in motorsport as Helmut Deimel and then in this outstanding quality (which, however, only really comes into its own on the high-resolution Blu-Ray).
70 years of Walter Röhrl
His appeal is unbroken: Walter Röhrl celebrated his 70th birthday in March 2017 and is still as much in demand as ever 25 years after the end of his active career. With this film, cult filmmaker Helmut Deimel dedicates a new work to him. Although the 60-minute film is a little short (you simply can't get enough of these images), it doesn't diminish the entertainment factor at all.
60 minutes full throttle
On the contrary, the 60 minutes give fresh meaning to the proverb "brevity is the spice of life", Walter Röhrl's life is traversed at breakneck speed, jumping from stage to stage at full throttle, changing continents almost every second, the best drifts and funniest comments from the rally world champion are just as much a part of it as very private moments at his home with his cat.
Röhrl's world tour
The film begins in 2017, Röhrl is celebrated at Porsche. Co-pilots such as Hans-Joachim Stuck tell a few uncensored anecdotes. The guests at the party laugh, Röhrl can't hold back his grin...
The movie then takes a leap back in time and shows the young Walter in the years when it all began.
Somewhat unexpectedly, there is suddenly a text in the picture "Walter Röhrl behind the camera"! When Walter Röhrl retired early, he devoted himself to his hobby: filming. He filmed his colleagues who were still in the race. These are also quite good shots!
Big goal: Monte Carlo Rally
For Walter Röhrl, (almost) everything revolved around the Monte Carlo Rally: "I'd rather have the four Monte Carlo victories up my sleeve than a world championship title". Accordingly, many moments are shown that led to this goal, starting with the first test runs on Opel Commodore in 1973. Sensational footage follows from 1976, when Walter finished in 4th place in the Monte Carlo Rally, directly after the three best-placed Lancia Stratos. The Italians became suspicious that someone in an Opel could come so close to the Lancias. Result: Fiat made Röhrl an offer.
1977 - Start with Fiat and Geistdörfer
The film shows very impressively how the era began with co-driver Christian Geistdörfer. They drove from victory to victory, often surprisingly, and a lot of champagne was sprayed and drunk.
The viewer is taken through the different years at high speed, with impressive passages in the Lancia Beta Montecarlo, when Röhrl was on the road with Formula 1 driver Patrese and selected endurance races were also driven.
Another treat is the footage of the 1979 Giro d'Italia, a race over several stages, alternating between rally tracks and circuit races on asphalt. Unimaginable today!
From Mercedes flop to Audi monster
After Röhrl won the world championship title in 1981 in a Fiat (despite a strike at Fiat and Röhrl having to drive the races in a Fiat on loan from the Jolly Club), he switched to Mercedes - the offer was probably too good. The rare recordings show how it came to an abrupt end and Röhrl then became virtually unemployed. Röhrl can then be seen in his new role: as presenter of the Monte Carlo Rally...
Before Röhrl joined Audi, however, he had another successful year at Opel (1982), where he was able to keep the new four-wheel drive Audis behind him thanks to good weather conditions. After another year with Lancia (1983), Röhrl then drove for Audi in 1984.
At this point at the latest, the viewer's heart beats noticeably faster: all the shots of the Audis driven by Röhrl (A2, Sport Quattro, S1, 200 Quattro) are spectacular. The impressive Group B is followed by the USA era with Hans-Joachim Stuck (Trans-Am and IMSA).
From DTM consultant to Porsche brand ambassador
After the active Audi era in the IMSA series, Röhrl was rarely seen behind the wheel. He was able to put his broad experience as a driver and his technical understanding of vehicles to good use as a DTM consultant and was one of the most important men in the team at the time.
In 1991, his active motorsport career finally came to an end, and in 1993 he began his time at Porsche, the brand from which Walter Röhrl bought his very first car as a young boy.
Does the movie inspire?
Anyone who loves motorsport, and generally likes the brands Ford, Opel, Fiat, Mercedes, Porsche, Lancia and Audi, should be thrilled by this movie. The entertaining movie entertains from the first minute, an extremely wide range of impressions is offered, you may have heard Walter Röhrl's sayings elsewhere, but who doesn't like to hear them again and again?
