It is well known that Henry Ford built the most famous mass-produced car in the world: the Tin Lizzie. Building cars in more or less large series was not Ford's invention. Other Americans and Europeans had done this before him. But Ford set world standards in series production in many respects. T-models were also built in Germany from 1926, namely as assembly production in Berlin. In this report, the author studies the successful model in detail. It is shown in many pictures.
85 years ago, a man had to vacate his desk at Ford who, at the age of 34, had already made it to second vice president of the company. In a memorandum to Henry Ford on January 20, 1926, Ernest C. Kanzler articulated what everyone in management knew, but dared not say in the presence of the stubborn authoritarian car tycoon: production of the Model T had to be discontinued because it was outdated, customers were fleeing in droves, and only a model replacement could turn the tide. The courageous Warner was ousted like other top managers before him who had dared to contradict the boss on fundamental issues. Nevertheless, the Ford A was finally developed and turned out to be a practical and durable successor.
Reason had a long tradition at Ford: as early as 1936, the Eifel placed great emphasis on streamlining and economy. The Taunus P3 and Sierra followed this ideal and competed with their ancestor in 1984 to compare the generations. During the Second World War, driving wood carburetor vehicles was the only way for many people to be mobile on a large scale. In the early 1940s, the gas generators used made enormous progress. If you can't buy it, build it! Walt Hansgen was an ambitious amateur racing driver from New Jersey, USA, who wanted to buy the latest sports car from Europe, the Jaguar C-Type, in 1952. But none of the 7 examples brought to the USA were intended for Hansgen, so he built his own interpretation of the fastest racing sports car of his time.
The Ford Comète, the result of a collaboration between Ford France, Facel Métallon and Stabilimenti Farina, is certainly one of the rarest and most elegant production cars of the French post-war period. With just over 3000 examples produced, it remained a marginal figure, but at least one that made it into the Museum of Modern Art. In 1953, the "MoMa" selected ten cars and invited the public to a "non-commercial car exhibition" in New York, which paid homage to the vehicle design of the time. The Ford Taunus 12 M, a child of a German-American marriage, really needs no introduction. It was comfortable, spacious and, with its pontoon shape, also stylish. Its big brother, the 15 M, offered all the best features of the 12 M, together with a more powerful engine and better equipment. However, it also inherited a few weaknesses from the 12 M. The magazine 'Motor-Rundschau' took a close look at the new 15 M in 1955. Anyone who had expected a fashionable body sensation from the 'new model' from the Cologne plant will be somewhat surprised to see the new Taunus 15 M, which uses the basic body shape of the 12 M. This dress was probably 'made to measure' from the outset. The success of the 12 M was based on the fact that it offered the driving comfort of a much more powerful car in the still 'small' 1200 class. Although the Ford people had gradually extracted 38 hp from the original Eifel engine, which allowed the car to travel 120 km/h, the car made it clear that it was actually 'destined for higher things'. When, at high speeds, the engine indicated that it was now giving enough, the driver and vehicle really began to feel at ease. The Taunus 12 M had been put into the nest of the Cologne Ford works by the big mother from Dearborn. In keeping with its origins, it was also very American in some respects, such as the suspension, steering and body size compared to other European small cars. But this also had its advantages. The Ford GT 40 Mark II with chassis no. 1019 won the 1968 Barcelona 6-hour race on the notorious Montjiuch circuit. The GT 40 was driven by the two drivers Brian Miur and Paco Goodyear. The car belonged to Paul Hawkins at the time and is now in Spanish ownership.
Surprisingly, the large V6 was quite similar in its characteristics to the small four-cylinder engines. Instead of drawing its power from the depths of its displacement, it also preferred to draw its power from the engine speed. However, as it harmonized excellently with the transmission, this was not seen as a disadvantage. The generally very conventional design of the car also had its advantages, as can be seen from this historical test report.

A mid-range car that is intended to appeal to a wide range of buyers can never please everyone. Some prefer it sporty, others prefer it comfortable. On top of that, it should be easy to handle in the city and comfortable on long journeys, as well as powerful and economical. And of course it also has to look good. The Ford Taunus P5 mastered this balancing act very well in 1965, as this historical test report shows. Even the much-maligned V4 engine came off surprisingly well.
The Ford Mustang was still brand new when Scott Bailey, the publisher of the "Automobile Quarterly" book series, asked Carrozzeria Bertone to build a special Mustang and sent a brand new production Mustang to Italy for this purpose. It was the modifications that Carroll Shelby made to the Ford Mustang that turned the pony car into a serious competitor on the racetrack. In February 1970, AR published an exceptionally comprehensive long-distance test. Five models (1300, 1300 GT, 1600, 1600 GT, 2000 GT) of the new Capri in four equipment variants had gone through the entire test procedure, thousands of kilometers had been covered. At five densely printed pages, this was probably the most comprehensive test ever presented in Automobil Revue. And the AR editors summed up the test quite positively: "With the Capri fastback coupé, those who make the marketing decisions at Ford of Europe have achieved a unique coup. The resounding success of this model is due to the combination of various sales-promoting features such as a sporty, elegant shape, four seats, a wide range of engines and equipment and, last but not least, the low prices of the basic models. Drivers with real sporting ambitions cannot warm to the Capri. Young people or couples with small children, on the other hand, for whom chic lines mean more than sporty temperament, comfort and manageability, will "feel at home" in the Capri, because it is a beautiful car."
For most people, the VW Beetle is the Volkswagen par excellence, in every sense of the word. A car for the people, a people's car. And the Beetle was indeed an above-average success. But before it, Ford's Model T had already passed the 15 million mark, and in modern times the Toyota Corolla, VW Golf and Ford's F-series even managed to reach over 30 million, although they were not the only people's cars to do so. The Ford Capri was also extremely successful in motor racing. Ford set the course early on and laid a good foundation for popular and top-class sport with the RS 2600. In many countries, Capri cars were at the top of the national championships, but they were also successful in international competitions. In 1971, Dieter Glemser won the European Touring Car Championship in the over 2-liter displacement class. In 1972, Ford even took the first two places in the European Touring Car Championship and also won the touring car classification at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. After the touring car title had to be relinquished to BMW in 1973, it was regained in 1974, when Hans Heyer became European champion. From 1978, after a break, Ford competed with the turbo Capris, which were developed by Zakspeed. The car was a sensation, but for various reasons there were no title wins until 1981. The revenge came in 1981. Klaus Ludwig took pole position in every race of the German Racing Championship and won ten races. A side effect was the lap time of 7 minutes 18.4 seconds that Ludwig set on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring, only slightly slower than the Formula 1 cars a few years earlier. Ford Capri cars were also used in rally and rallycross sport. The 250 hp 4x4 Capri special versions, which were vastly superior to all competitors in rallycross, were particularly special.
Pietro Frua was a master of secondary utilization. He also reused the body he had created for the Glas GT after the end of its production and fitted it to the platform of the Ford Escort with economical modifications. Two such coupés with different engines were created, but the hoped-for small series production did not materialize. Both cars survived. For 20,000 francs, the buyer received an uncompromising road version of the racing Capri in the form of the RS 2600, which could also take on much more expensive opponents in sprints on straight stretches. Tight bends, however, were not the RS 2600's thing, and the hard suspension also called for compromises. At least that was the conclusion of the AR testers after they were able to subject the fast Capri to a short test. Enthusiasm prevailed, however, as the driving performance was too attractive.
At the end of 1970, Ford Cologne decided to build high-performance models for fun and sport itself in future and to sell them through a network of selected dealers. The first product of the Ford subsidiary AVO was the RS 2600, a 150 hp Capri for DM 16,000. In the first test, the hot-rodded Capri revealed its sporting talent - as well as an almost unquenchable thirst.
