Actually a good idea! The AvD Oldtimer Grand Prix attracts tens of thousands of racing and classic car enthusiasts every year, which is exactly the target group for a classic car auction. In 2012, however, Coys was only partially successful.
Interesting but mixed offer
Formula 1 cars, sports prototypes, GT racing cars, but also rare classics were on offer. 55 items were called out on August 11, ranging from a Fiat Bianchina Giardinera to a Honda CR 72, motorcycles and cars mixed together. Highlights included a Mercedes 300 SL, a 1963 ATS GTS and a Jaguar SS 100. A Ferrari F1 (412 T 1 B from 1994) was also on the lot list.
Cautious bidders
There was an almost solemn and reserved atmosphere in the tent when the individual bids were called. The bids came in hesitantly, and hardly anyone wanted to bid on some of the vehicles. Many visitors left the tent long before the end of the auction, the weather outside was too nice, the racing action on offer too exciting.
One third not sold
The sales success matched the mood in the tent. A good two-thirds of the bids were sold, although in many cases well below the estimated price. The Barclay Arrows F1, once driven by Gerhard Berger, went to its new owner for just € 30,000, far below the estimated price of € 100,000 to € 120,000. The Arrows A8 from 1985, driven at the time by Thierry Boutsen, did not fare much better.
Favorable opportunities
€ 250,000 (before commissions/taxes) is not much money for a practically immaculate 1938 Jaguar SS 100 with a special history. The € 355,000 offered for the ATS GTS is also far below the previous estimated prices that were quoted for the car in the past. And the € 480,000 offered for the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Roadster from 1958 in good condition is also far below the sales records that this particular model has recently celebrated. Even € 44,000 for a very nice Jaguar E Type Series III Roadster sounds like a bargain!
Missed opportunities
The bids for a BMW 3.0 CSL in reasonable condition only went up to € 30,000, then it was over. Not sold, was the decree. The same happened to a beautiful Lamborghini Jalpa from 1985, a rarity and certainly a sought-after gem in a few years' time. The bids did not want to go higher than € 25,000, not sold.
A little more courage and many a collector could probably have made an intelligent investment.
