Fred and Augie Duesenberg, sons of a German immigrant, created America's most legendary and prestigious car brand. They were talented engineers without ever having received any training. From 1900 to 1903 they familiarized themselves with car construction at Rambler, in 1904 they built their first car under the Mason brand (their financial backer) and from 1907 they also built racing cars. The Duesenberg Motor Company, founded in 1913, designed marine engines and, during the First World War, aircraft engines. The Duesenberg inline eight-cylinder engine with overhead camshaft was used for numerous record-breaking drives and race victories from 1920 onwards. Highlights were the Indy victories of 1924, 1925 and 1927. Indianapolis was also the location of the Duesenberg Automobile and Motor Co. which built luxury touring cars from 1921.
