It is surprising how popular this French event is in pable hands of Australian drivers, Frank Gardner and Paul Hawkins. Two years ago Ian was himself the most successful small G.T. driver in England with a Sebring Sprite but last year abandoned the driving seat to run a mixed team of Lotus Juniors and model 23 sports cars. It was in one of his cars that poor Peter Ryan was killed at Reims after earlier being the only formula Junior driver to beat P e t e r A r u n d e l l i n f a i r c o m b a t . People across the Atlantic are beginning to show more than a passing interest in European racing and it looks as though there will be entries from Ford, Pontiac and Chevrolet at Le Mans. Each of these firms now produces really high performance cars and although they have been a little lacking in European successes so far, the 24 hour race which demands speed and endurance more than sheer raceability could be their first victory. It was interesting to see three of the big V. 8 engined Ford Falcons in the Monte Carlo Rally and to find one of them, admittedly with an experienced Scan dinavian driver, making fastest time on the special stages.
