One day, Count Albert de Dion, "bon vivant du Tout-Paris", discovered a miniature steam engine in a toy store. He immediately visited the manufacturer, Georges Bouton, who, together with his brother-in-law Charles Trépardoux, constructed these small miracle machines in a modest workshop. A few months later, the Société De Dion-Bouton et Cie was founded and filed a patent application for a new vertical steam boiler with small evaporation tubes. In 1883, the first automobile quadricycle was built: 2-cylinder steam engine at the front, front-wheel drive with two belts, rear-wheel steering. A first four-seater followed in 1884, and the company moved into larger workshops in Paris-Puteaux, where 20 workers soon built steam automobiles of all sizes, now with wooden instead of wire wheels and chain drive.
