The de Tomaso Mangusta was Alessandro de Tomaso's first large road-going sports car. Equipped with a robust American V8 engine, it was capable of similar performance to the elite sports cars of the time, looked stunning and was attractively priced. The path of combining Italian design, racing-oriented chassis ideas and American large-scale production engines was taken by Alessandro De Tomaso and others: Renzo Rivolta, Peter Monteverdi or the Facel company with the Facel Vega. However, De Tomaso can be considered the most successful overall, because not only did they produce cars for many years, but the number of units produced was also far higher than that of the others. It was no coincidence that the car produced from 1967 to 1971 bore the name "Mangusta", named after a cat-like animal that is immune to snake venom and is considered an equal or even superior opponent to the Cobra snake.
