Alejandro de Tomaso started building cars in Modena in 1958. But it was only with the Pantera in 1970 that the Argentinian became famous as a car manufacturer. By 1990, De Tomaso was the largest independent brand in Italy. In the years after 2000, there were several attempts to revive the brand, but none were successful. Alejandro de Tomaso, born in 1928, came to Europe in 1955, where he first earned his living as a test and racing driver for Osca in Bologna. Three years later, he built his first car, the first in a long series of prototypes, as they never made it out of this stage. It was not until 1965 that he succeeded in putting a "production car" on wheels with the Vallelunga, as 50 of this model were sold. The next hit was the Mangusta, of which as many as 401 were built between 1966 and 1972. 1969 was the peak year for this car with 215 cars delivered, after which things became quieter for this two-seater.
